George Lucas Totally Owes Me A Drink
(Star Wars fandom, don't ever say I don't give you pressies.)

On the AO3, there now exist fandom titles for:

    Star Wars (Comics)

    Star Wars (Video Games)

For all of the book series' various eras, using http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Star_Wars_books as a reference:
    - Star Wars: Sith Era - Various (synonym: Star Wars: Old Republic Era - Various)
    - Star Wars: Rise of Empire Era - Various
    - Star Wars: Rebellion Era - Various
    - Star Wars: New Republic Era - Various
    - Star Wars: New Jedi Order Era - Various
    - Star Wars: Legacy Era - Various

    For the films:

The synonym fandom titles for Star Wars Original Trilogy are currently:
    # Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
    # Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
    # Star Wars: A New Hope
    # SW:ANH
    # ANH
    # Star Wars Episode V: Empire Strikes Back
    # Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
    # A New Hope
    # The Empire Strikes Back
    # Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
    # Return of the Jedi
    # SW:RotJ
    # RotJ
    # SW:ESB
    # SW:TESB
    # ESB

I am currently looking at the 84 works that had been tagged by their authors into the Star Wars fandom to figure out if we can make Star Wars a synonym for Star Wars Original Trilogy temporarily, because currently there is only one work in any of the synonyms of Star Wars Original Trilogy, because that work was tagged into the Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi fandom initially by its author (full disclosure: that was me). All of the existing characters and pairings tags have now been untangled, and the fandom tag Star Wars is now a temporary synonym for Star Wars Original Trilogy.

As soon as we get metatagging capability, Star Wars will be a separate tag which encompasses all of the component Star Wars fandoms under its umbrella, so to speak... all of the movies and expanded universe tie-ins and books and videogames and tv shows and whateverthehellelse... and we'll all be able to breathe a little easier.

The synonym fandom titles for Star Wars Prequel Trilogy are currently:
    # The Phantom Menace
    # Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
    # Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
    # Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
    # Star Wars (TPM)
    # Star Wars Episode 3 - Revenge of the Sith
    # Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith
    # Revenge of the Sith
    # Star Wars: Attack of the Clones
    # Attack of the Clones
    # SW:AotC
    # AotC
    # SW:RotS
    # RotS
    # SW:TPM - Fandom (this is a slight glitch that we'll have to deal with tomorrow related to when the rake process rakes; there is also currently a freeform tag TPM which should ultimately possibly be a fandom tag synonym instead, but I'm not sure, since it's being used as a timeframe-type freeform, like pre-ANH or pre-TPM)
    # Phantom Menace

I'm still wrangling character and pairing names, but I think we've got the fandom titles sorted out, and we're working on the character and pairing names for the movies which had already been uploaded into the AO3 are now wrangled. The Expanded Universe character and pairing details will come later. Thank you for your patience as the wranglers wrangulate.

    SGA canon questions
Because my memory is crap, do we ever see the team camping offworld, i.e. see what kind of tents they use and such, or is the offworld camping a pure fanon thing?

Unrelated, I remember the team sitting together in their mess hall in a couple of episodes, but I can't recall which those were. Argh. My memory, worse than a Swiss cheese.

I'm sitting here in happy tears, because yeah, this is how it feels.
Of all of the things I never, ever, ever expected to say in this lifetime...

Because [info - personal] general_jinjur is amazing, and the OTW is amazing, and the AO3 is amazing, and the Wrangulator is amazing, and because everyone who is uploading stories and tagging them is amazing...

    Go read:

forma by [info - personal] general_jinjur. It's Tag Wuzzle Wrangler RPF.

I will apparently be cosplaying myself next Escapade, y'all.

(If there is a fanartist in range of my voice who can draw in the style of Nausicaa Valley of the Wind and is willing to do a commission, please let me know.)

(Heck, if any fanartist wants to do something related to this, let [info - personal] general_jinjur know... she says the Wrangulatorverse is open to sharing according to the open-transform statement on her profile, but I'm sure she'd love to hear if you make any derivative work from it!)

And yes, the tag wrangling team is still looking for more volunteers.

I just renamed the files on teland because a rather gratitude-inducing individual informed me that -- somehow -- it got indexed on google, which... no.

    WORLD OF NO.

I -- look. It could be as simple as the fact that I've been using my gmail to point people to the story, but I would like to ask -- *beg* -- that those of you who have read the thing *not link it anywhere*. At all. Yes, that includes del.icio.us, nalasalad2. And maybe don't write out the links in your google apps?

    Christ.

I'm going to put in that thingy to block robots just as soon as I can make my brain work enough to do that. In the meantime...

Hell. Just take the 'me' out of the file name. Save it onto your hard drives if you want it, because I'm *thisfuckingclose* to yoinking it.

Easy Recipe #3: Apple-Oatmeal Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream
This was the most popular choice in the poll, and funny enough, I haven't encountered yet a person who didn't like it, even when initially sceptical towards oatmeal or apples. (Well, unless they have allergies, of course.) I'm going to use °C and metric measurements for the recipe, but converters are easy to find online and also it's not one of those where you have to be super accurate, so that shouldn't be a problem.

    What you need:

    - oatmeal (I buy the 1 kg package which lasts for several meals)
    - 2 to 3 apples
    - sugar
    - cinnamon
    - a bar of butter (I use the 250 g bars -- you'll definitely need less than a pound)
    - vanilla ice cream

and a greased baking pan, casserole dish, or similar (if it's fireproof and somewhat flat it'll work).

Serve fresh out of the oven, in small bowls, with some ice cream on top. Makes for a nice hot-cold contrast. Oh, and you eat the cake with spoons.

    Additional info:

    - Makes you feel full extremely quickly. I've had huge people who are big eaters laugh in my face when I served them the "tiny" dish, only to see them declare defeat after their second bowl.
    - The dough can be kept in the fridge to use it up later, and also works great as a muesli breakfast substitute.

You can't really mess up this one. Trust me.

    Question Tiemz!
Do you know of any video games ("with nice graphics" would be a bonus) where there's a transformation sequence of a MALE character where the camera pans lovingly and repeatedly over the guy's ass and bare chest for what feels like ten minutes? And he wears, I dunno, a thong and a few strings of strategically placed floss to cover his nipples.

You don't have to guess why I'm asking.

    young rats are exhausting
It's not exactly that I had forgotten already how much energy and destructive initiative young rats have once they've gotten over their initial shyness, but there definitely was rose-tinted nostalgia blurring those memories. In any case I now remember why the free playtime outside I give younger rats has always been only an hour or two at most, whereas I let older ones out as much as they like as long as I'm home.

I also need to come up with more entertainment to occupy them now that they feel secure outside. Currently Noah in particular expends most of his not inconsiderable energy trying to get out of their play enclosure (simple wood panels held together with cable binders), that I put up for their safety while they are this young and reckless. Though even with the escape attempts, it still makes watching them easier. And the ferret climbing tree I bought for them has been a big hit, but clearly I now need to do some more landscaping to satisfy their exploratory drive.

I am agog at the United States Postal Service! I ordered some Titan Books Transformers collections off Half.com Friday night--well after business hours--and two of them arrived TODAY. Monday. The equivalent of overnight delivery, since they couldn't possibly have gotten to the post office before Saturday morning.

Via Media Mail, which is supposed to come within 4-8 days, if you are lucky.

You are raising unreasonable expectations, Postal Service! The next time I completely fail to get a package, I will be even madder at you!

The collections themselves are LOVE, by the way. I first encountered them in person in New York two weeks ago, and bought two--Legacy of Unicron and City of Fear--because they are just that exciting. You see, the UK Transformers collections were originally published in magazine-style format, so regular comics-sized reprints (like the IDW ones) don't quite do them justice. Nor, frequently, do the scans.

The paper on the Titan reprints is also a bit less glossy. I don't like glossy paper, especially on trades, where the angle of the pages increases its tendency to reflect back at you.

And on Half.com, as opposed to in New York, they are pretty cheap.

    OMFG I LOVE FANDOM
The current tag cloud of common tags on AOOO: http://archiveofourown.org/tags

I LOLed loud enough to scare the cats when I spotted that the most commonly-used of the common tags are apparently at this point in the open beta process:
    Angst and Humor...
followed by Alternate Universe and Crossover...
followed by Drabble, Drama, Episode Related, First Time, and Romance.

    Ah, fandom, never change!!!

Thinky thoughts about my tags of choice... )

That covers all the stories I had uploaded to my outdated websites. Now I'm trawling through my journaling services for the rest of them, that I hadn't gotten around to reformatting yet... once I'm done with that, all the fanfic I've ever finished and posted online anywhere will all be available at http://archiveofourown.org/users/elke_tanzer

*waggles pom-poms at the OTW and the AOOO*

ETA: Holy crap, I had fics squirreled away all over the place. I'm up to over 40 works uploaded now, and there's at least one more I need to figure out how to associate properly with the rest of its universe, and I'm going to be tweaking the tags off and on over the next few days. But mission accomplished this weekend: I feel like I understand the AOOO interface. Yayz. Now to sleep for a few hours before starting the workweek...

Thank heavens for un-startle-able support for beta testers!
I can't believe I just sent the questions I've just sent to AO3 Support asking for help using the archive, because it kicked an error message. Apparently the characters and/or pairings for one of my doppelganger-based moresome non-con fics startled or confused the software.

    Ahahaha. Um. Whoops?

    *attempts not to blush*

ETA: OMFG thank you to my super-sekrit iconmaker friend, because now I have a commemorative icon for when I tried to upload the a character list for my porny BSG fic "Gaius Baltar, Six, Six, Six, Six, Six, Six" and made the AOOO kick an error at me...

(The correct character list is actually properly formatted as "Gaius Baltar, Six", by the way, no matter how many versions of her are manhandling him in the fic.)

    Archive of Our Own?
Thanks to the excellent [info - personal] zing_och, who also got me the Dreamwidth code, I now have an Archive of Our Own account!

It is exciting. I wasn't active in fandom (lurking *a lot* but not really active) during the heyday of central archives, so I've always sort of quietly yearned for a place to put my stuff up, where all my little incidental things could get edited up properly without spamming my flist.

A stable server with resources is nice--I put a bunch of my stuff up on the Marvel Fanfiction Archive site, which doesn't exist anymore.

(I mean, obviously not stable *yet*. But eventually!)

In other news, I'm not very prolific, but after five years it does add up! *eyes stack of things to upload*

    Updating habits
A discussion on Dreamwidth asked for the steps you take when updating -- what you use / pick / do, and in what order. The interesting part is how it made me view the update page more closely than usual and I consciously noticed all the things I don't use. On InsaneJournal, these are:

Cut for those not interested )

As for updating, I more or less follow the modules in the way they are ordered from top to bottom, i.e. first the subject line and icon, then the entry text, checking it in the preview window, then adding tags, and posting it.

What annoys me a little is that I often have to look up my tags in a new tab, because there's neither an auto-complete feature nor a direct link (to the tags page) on the update page. It would save me some hassle.

    What about you?

    Group chat, food, etc.
♣ I might participate in this Sunday's fandom chat again. I had issues with the first one, simply because chats in groups tend to make me feel overwhelmed and my energy drains quickly. But I like the idea in itself and I think I'm ready for a new try. The chat is being held via AIM and open for all, so if some of you would join me (us), that'd be nice.

♣ I feel tired. I have a light cold -- definitely not swine flu, as I don't have any other symptoms. I'm just sniffling and feeling a bit murky. Fighting it with lots of rest and cream cake. (^^) But it's making it hard to cook. I wanted to make noodles with a mushroom-broccoli cream sauce, actually, but instead I just fried the mushrooms together with some cheese. Definitely beats having no breakfast. Will buy new food later.
Other recipes I already tried in the last two weeks or so were the ones mentioned in my cooking poll -- nut-honey waffles with fried apples, noodles with meat-tomato sauce, baked bread with cheese cream... plus butter-vanilla cookies and a Moussaka. A Moussaka is basically a casserole with fried eggplants, minced meat with onions, a cheese-tomato sauce, and extra cheese on top. The recipe mentioned "skim[ming] the fat before serving", so I was, like, oh this is possibly going to be oily and stuff. I definitely wasn't prepared for skimming off a small dessert bowl of pure fat. And it was still really oily. It tasted fine, but the texture made me feel slightly sick. I think the problem was caused by a) the sauce and fried meat, b) the eggplants because these had to be fried in oil as well and they soaked it up like nobody's business. Next time I'm going to do it differently somehow.

♣ Upcoming: the recipe that won the poll (Apple-Oatmeal Cake With Vanilla Ice Cream) and another two issues of Nachbarschaftsschau (I'll start with a German edition first).

♣ I also might try to answer a number of old comments this weekend. Here's the explanatory post, just as a reminder (if needed).

Hello, Yule Writer and Other Curious People! Here's my letter in which I...well, basically repeat my prompts and give a little bit about the sources. I'm crossposting it to Dreamwidth and Insanejournal because I feel like it, and if you feel the need to track me back farther my Livejournal is still available to you.

I asked for two comics fandoms and two book fandoms this year: the comics are Lovebunny and Mr. Hell, a short-lived series that mostly parodied superhero comics, and Hothead Paisan, an independent queer comic, and the books are Dragonsword, a fantasy trilogy, and The Changeling Prince, a fantasy novel.

    Here's the nattering! )

More information on the AO3's Open Beta is available in the announcement or in [info - community] otw_news.

Unrelatedly, and less importantly, I also now have a fannish presence on Google Wave (elke.tanzer at gmail.com).

(Sorry, Google, you're very shiny and wonderful, but you are not Dreamwidth, and you are not OTW. Dreamwidth and OTW each by themselves rock my world, and the two together are like peanut butter and chocolate hot chocolate and Baileys.)

(Sorry, workplace, but I've given you more than enough of my time and energy and attention this year, so you'll just have to deal with less than my full attention for the rest of the day. This year has sucked in so many ways, and it's high time for some happy.)

PSA: On trans-related posts in this journal
This is a bit complicated to explain.

My process of transitioning to my real gender has reached an important point -- now it's not just about gender presentation, therapy, or a bit of paperwork anymore, now it's also biological.

I've had times when I felt depressed, jealous, or oversensitive when I read about other people's transition process -- not because I disliked them or thought they didn't deserve it, let's be clear on that! -- it was because I couldn't move forward on my own journey and was powerless to do anything about it (laws, medical requirements, etc.), so I didn't feel like I could deal with the topic. Therefore I retreated (up to a certain point).

Now my position has changed, and I could make others feel just as bad as I did back then; a role reversal of sorts.

Fact is, I feel the need to write about my transitioning, and of course I have that right (it's my journal, after all). Additionally, it could be of interest to others, although not all of my situation here in Germany will be comparable to other countries and regions. So this journal will include more content that is not just about trans issues in general, but my personal changes, problems, and successes during transition. (Not sure yet whether I'm gonna file it under the "transgender" or "life / meatspace / socialising" tags, or create a new one.)

I'm going to use cuts and try to give at least vague hints about what's underneath, so people can decide for themselves if they want to read it. (Eta: I'm not going to create an extra filter for these posts, as I don't like extra anything, actually -- I'm very much a WYSIWYG journaler.)

If you are in a difficult situation yourself where you feel you have to defriend me or filter me off your reading list for a while to take care of yourself, I understand. I really do. All I'd like (if it's not too much of a bother) is a short message or comment -- private message, email, reply to this entry [comments are screened]--, so that I am informed. Don't feel bad about it. You can always come back later and I'll welcome you with open arms like no time had passed.

    That's it, I think.

Intense is one word for it (an inadequate, understating word)
I saw the most amazing play last night. Eclipsed by Danai Gurira is the story of 4 "wives" of a Liberian Rebel Commander over 2 months in 2002. That incredibly brief summary doesn't do it justice. The two hour play has only 5 actors who all sustain passion and energy through the length of the production. Each woman is distinct and complex, their situations and decisions spelled out without undue exposition dumps and the actors were amazing; funny, depressed, terrified and terrifying by turns.

I'm being incoherent so I shall let some of the reviews do my praising for me:

'Eclipsed' Catches Light in the Depths of Despair; Washington Post

'Prisoners of War and Sex in Liberia; New York Times

And a brief interview with the playwright:

After seeing what else they did re: integrating "funny" stabs at/parodies of fans and fandom into the show, I'm not going to watch this. Never mind that I fucking hate the fact they created that meta level on the show in the first place. It's giving me similar feelings like when Stephen King wrote himself into the Dark Tower series. Only with the added nauseous feeling that "uh-oh, these people think this is YOU".
